Design of New Housing for the Indigenous Village of Tyonek, Alaska

In May of 2021 the tribal council approved a project to work with Purdue University in the development of housing designs for the Village of Tyonek.

In September of 2021, The Executive Director of the Tebughna Foundation indicated there were sixteen abandoned homes in Tyonek, and they would like them demolished and build new ones. They were looking at three types of homes; single family homes, duplexes with half to be used for rental, and a quad design for housing sick people to keep entire families from getting sick.

On 23 September, Purdue University agreed to develop these designs for the village.

Biweekly meetings are being held to discuss the project.

In November 2021, the Cold Climate Housing Research Center (CCHRC) was contacted at the request of Purdue University to assist in the review of designs, access to a geothermal assessment of the area, and contact information for a pro bono or low-cost licensed architect to seal the drawings once they are completed. CCHRC has agreed to assist in this effort but may require additional funds to support. The team is awaiting the official request. The design is expected to be completed in May 2022.
